Five Fold Increase of Transit Fees for
Bosphorus & Dardanelles

The transit fee, i.e. dues for light, sanitation and life saving, charged by Turkey for the vessels using the Straits of Bosphorus and Dardanelles will be increased by five times as of 7th of October. It represents an increase of USD 4 per ton. This is the first time Turkey changes these dues since 1983.

According to the Montreux Straits Convention signed in 1936, Turkey retains the right to demand light, sanitation and life saving dues from ships passing through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles.

In 1936, the calculation was made over gold franc and one franc was equivalent to 0.29 grams (0.01023 ounces) of fine gold. When the franc was no longer in circulation, the payments started to be made in U.S. dollars based on the Turkish lira exchange rate but the value of 1 golden franc was still kept as 0.29 grams of fine gold, regardless of the current exchange rates.

In 1983, Turkey fixed 1 gold franc to $0.8063 and to date, the tolls have been applied by multiplying the current exchange buying rate by the fixed gold franc value of $0.8063.

With the new regulation which will enter into force on Oct. 7, 2022, the passage fee will be increased from $0.8 to $ 4 per tonnage for the first time since 1983.

The fee will be updated by the Ministry of Transportation on July 1st every year.
